Barley news EU: Spring barley yield forecasts improve remarkably in recent weeks

Planting of spring barley took place later than in recent years in the EU, spring conditions were variable and included frost and heat, wet soils, storms, hail and dryness, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in July.

Yield prognostications were pessimistic for a long time, but have improved remarkably in recent weeks.

France increased its spring barley acreage from 640 to 730 thousand ha, and expects a crop of 4.3 – 4.5 mln tonnes; the good winter barley results give hope for another good spring barley crop as well.

The German Malting Barley Association reports 265 thousand ha of spring malting barley plantings; malting barley demand of the industry would normally be 2.3 – 2.4 mln tonnes, of which 200 thousand tonnes of winter barley. However, a large carry-over of 2019 crop barley and a corona-reduced demand in 2021 will cut the industry needs to round about 2 mln tonnes. According to the Gauger analysts, supplies will be split about 50:50 between domestic and imported barley.

Denmark enjoyed fairly good conditions in spring 2020, plantings were 580 thousand ha, and the production should reach 3.4 mln tonnes. The exports are usually 0.8 to 1.0 mln tonnes, they depend on the price relation of feed/malting barley.
